The Postgraduate Program in Mathematics (PPGMat) of the Federal University of Paraíba was created in March 1994. At the beginning, the Program offered the Master Degree in mathematics, and since 2019 it also offers the PhD Degree in mathematics. The aims of the Program are to contribute to the qualification of math teachers across the Northeastern region of Brazil, as well as to promote high level research in the fields covered by the Program, such as Algebra, Analysis, Geometry, Topology and Probability.

Currently the permanent academic staff of the PPGMat is formed by 34 researches whose work covers 16 research lines in the fields aforementioned. Each year the Program offers a broad variety of scientific activities, such as summer schools, talks, seminars and scientific meetings. These initiatives seek to promote scientific cooperation among Brazilian and foreigner researchers that act in the many fields of math.
